How to Use a Random Number Generator
Simple ways to use random numbers for selections, games, testing and demonstrations, plus an important security warning.
In this guide
Choose the range first
Decide the smallest and largest number that should be possible. For a six-sided die simulation, the range is 1 through 6. For choosing a number from a list of 100 items, you might use 1 through 100.
Be clear about inclusivity
Check whether the tool includes both the minimum and maximum values. A range of 1โ10 normally means ten possible whole numbers when both ends are included.
Useful everyday applications
Random numbers can help select a presentation order, choose a test value, simulate simple games or pick an item from a numbered list. They can also be useful when teaching probability concepts.
Do not use it for secrets
A simple online random-number tool is not the right choice for generating encryption keys, recovery codes or other security-sensitive secrets. Those jobs require a cryptographically secure random source.
