How to Convert Fahrenheit to Celsius
The Fahrenheit-to-Celsius formula explained with familiar examples and a quick way to check the result.
The formula
Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature, then multiply the result by 5/9. In formula form: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9.
A familiar example
68°F is a useful reference. Subtract 32 to get 36, then multiply by 5/9 to get 20°C. This is why 68°F and 20°C are often used as equivalent room-temperature examples.
Negative temperatures
The formula works for temperatures below zero as well. Keep the minus sign through the subtraction step and use a calculator when the numbers are awkward.
Check the direction
If you are converting a warm Fahrenheit temperature and your Celsius answer suddenly looks extremely cold, check that you subtracted 32 before multiplying by 5/9.
